Background Information
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines a cross-connection as a point in the distribution system (piping) where non-potable water can be introduced to potable sources. All service lines connected to public water systems are potential cross-connections.Your current water distribution system is designed so that water flows from the water main through a service line to your site. However, certain conditions can cause water to flow from your plumbing back into the distribution system and the local public water supply, creating a potentially hazardous incident.
As a matter of public safety, federal law requires the installation of backflow prevention devices on all water services in order to prevent potential harmful contamination. Periodic testing of certain backflow prevention devices is also required.
